"I,——, do swear, (or affirm, as the case may be,) that I
will, to the best of my skill and judgment, diligently and
faithfully, without partiality or prejudice, execute the office
of————according to the constitution and laws of this State;
and that since the fourth day of July, in the year of 1851', 1
have* not, in any manner, violated the provisions of the
present or late constitution in relation the bribery of voters,
or preventing legal votes, or procuring illegal votes
to be given; (and if a Governor, Senator, member of the
House of Delegates or Judge,) that I will not, directly or in-
directly, receive the profits or any part of the profits of any
other office during the time of my acting as ———. 1 do fur-
ther swear (or affirm) that I will bear true allegiance to the
State of Maryland, and support the constitution and laws
thereof, and that I will bear true allegiance to the United
States, and support, protect and defend the constitution, laws
and government thereof, as the supreme law of the land, any
law or ordinance of this or any State to the contrary not-
withstanding: and I do further swear (or affirm) that I will,
to the best of my abilities, protect and defend the union of
the United States, and not allow the same to be broken up
and dissolved or the government thereof to be destroyed
under any circumstances, if in my power to prevent it; and
that I will, at.all fishes, discountenance and oppose all po*-
litical combinations having for - their object such dissolution of
destruction."
AMENDMENTS PROPOSED.:;
Amend section 4th, article first, by inserting after the
words "or destruction," the following: "And I do further
swear (or affirm,) that I have not ait any time been in armed
hostility to the United States or the lawful authorities there-
of, and that I have not been in any manner in the service of.
the so-called Confederate States of America, and that I have
not voluntarily left this State, and gone within the
military lines of the so-called Con federate States or armies
with the purpose of adhering to said States or armies."
Amend by inserting at the end of the section the following:
"And no person who has at any time been in armed hostility
'to the United States or the lawful authorities thereof, or who
has been. in any-manner in the service of the so-called Can-
federate States of America, and no person who has volunta-
rily left this State and gone within the military lines of the
so-called Confederate States or armies with the purpose of ad-
.hering .to said States or armies, shall be entitled to vote at
.any election to be held in this State, or to hold any office of
.Honor, profit or trust under the laws of this State."
" Amend section 7th, article first by adding to the end of the
section the following: "And I do further swear (or affirm,)
