REPORT OF GIRLS' SCHOOL.
To the School and Chapel Committee of the House of Refuge:
GENTLEMEN:
At the commencement of another year, I have the honor
of presenting you my annual report of the school under my
care.
In doing so, candor compels me to acknowledge, that the
school is not so flourishing as it was at the time of my last
report.
. This you will readily account for after having examined
the following statistics:
No. in attendance January 1, 1865...........................50
" admitted during the year...................................20
" returned......................................................... 5
" discharged......................................................40
" now in attendance............................................35
This exhibit shows that a large proportion of those who
were in the House at the commencement of the year, have
left us; and as you are aware that in putting out girls, we
select those whose mental and moral qualifications stand the
fairest, you will not be surprised at the fact I have stated.
Of the 35 now in the school, all can read with more or less
fluency; 32 write in copies; 26 are taught arithmetic; 17
study geography, and 3 study grammar.
For the attainments of those received and discharged, I re-
fer you to Table 9, Superintendent's report.
We feel, however, that there is another cause besides the
one we have referred to that has been rather unfavorable to
the best interests of the School it is the frequent return of
large girls to the Institution. Such are generally reckless,
unwilling to be controlled, or to conform to the rules and
regulations necessary for the proper management and discip-
