Kellum Broughton, a witness produced on behalf of claim- ant, being duly sworn, answers and says : To the first interrogatory : A. Forty-three years; been a voter twenty-two years, re- sided in 1865 in No. 6 District. 2d. A. Did apply; took the oath; no charge; no witnesses ; answered all their questions. 3d. 3d. Did not vote, because I was not registered; would have voted for Franklin. 4th. Waived. Special interrogatories: By looking over the books of Registration, it appears that you are entered as " disloyal" by "your own confession." Did you or not, when before the Registers, admit that you were disloyal, either in heart or act to the United States Gov- ernment. A. I did not. Have you ever by open act or deed declared your adhesion to those who were in armed rebellion against the United States, or expressed a desire for their triumph. A. No, sir, I never did. Cross-examination. To the first interrogatory: A. No, sir; I have no recollection of expressing myself in any shape or form. 20 |
