192 To the first} re-direct int. filed: A. I don't know that I ever did. The above has been read to me and is correct. J. J. MATTHEWS. Written and attested to by H. Page, Clerk. Samuel S. Costen, a witness produced on behalf of claim- ant, being duly sworn, answers and says: To the first interrogatory : A. Fifty-six years, been a voter thirty-five years, resided in 1865 in District No. 8. ' 2d. A. Did apply; took the oath; they (the Registers) asked me first, who I voted for in 1861, Henry or Crisfield? I told them, for Henry. Next, if I was to see the two armies in array, which I would wish to be victorious? I said I did not care which. Then, if I was in favor of breaking up the Government? I said no; that I wanted the Union to stand as it had been. And these, as I recollect, were all the ques- tions they asked me. No charge; no witness, as I knew of; I have since examined the books, and find Peter McDaniel and James Dryden were summoned to testify to my disloy- alty. I asked them, and they said they did'nt testify any- thing against my loyalty. 3d. A. Did vote, and for Franklin, though I was not regis- tered. 4th. Waived. Cross-examination. 1st, 2d and 3d. Waived. 4th. A. I don't know that I have. 5th. A. I decline to answer. |
