Did apply, took the oath, no charge when I took the oath, I was afterwards informed of a charge, answered the questions, afterwards I was notified that I was charged with this expression—" That if the South would accept of any compromise the North could offer, she ought to be sunk," I went before the Registers and denied it, and offered to bring twenty men to prove I was always in favor of compromise, and always had been, but they would not summon them nor allow me to summon them, Mr. Conner, one of the Registers, who is said to be principal, said it was disloyal to be in favor of compromise, and said further that public repute said I was disloyal, the witness had been sworn and had testified to the above charge before I reached the place of registration, and his testimony taken in writing. 3d: A.
