Harvey F. Johnson, a witness produced on behalf of the
Claimant, being duly sworn, answers and says:
To the first interrogatory:
A Thirty-eight years; been a voter seventeen years; re-
sided in 1865 in district No. 14.
2d.
A. I did apply on the first day of their meeting; took the
oath; answered all the questions that were asked me, when
they got through asking me questions, Mr. Lawson, (a re-
gister of that district.) who seemed to act as principal, said
tome, "Sir, there is no charge against you, but I myself
have some doubts of your loyalty, and shall, therefore, defer
your case until our next meeting;" I then said to them, "If
there is a charge against me, will you give me the privilege
of being present and examining the witnesses, and of rebut-
ting the charge?" they both raid, "We will;" there was
only two present; I heard nothing more from it until I saw
the list of qualified voters, and my name was not there; I
went to the place where they had. advertised they would
meet in two days, on the first advertised day, but they did
not meet. there, but Greorge Stevenson's private house : the
next day I went to 'Stevenson's house, and there we found
them; I asked them why my name was net found among the
qualified voters; they gave me nn answer, but simply to
say, We are satisfied ;" I then asked them what it was ne-
cessary for me to do to be registerested us a qualified voter;
"Summon your witnesses," they said, "to prove your loy-
alty; I asked them who they would have; they said, "We
will have no one who has applied to us; and been refused re-
gistration, for we consider them perjured men; we will have
nobody here as witnesses except those who have been regis-
tered here as loyal voters;" I then asked them. to please
state what the charge against me was; they refused to
tell me what the charge was, but answered by saying, "A
