neighbors generally, and were or not many democrats pre-
vented from making application in consequence thereof?
A. I did talk about it generally; can't say any were pre-
vented from applying because of it, because I have heard no
one say so, but I should think there were.
(The Contestant objects to this question and answer.)
2d. How many democrats in your district were excluded
from voting by the registers ?"
(The Contestant objects to .this question and answer.)
A. About 140,I think.
Cross-Examination:
What did you understand by "questions touching your
right to registration ?"
A. Anything I had done disloyal.
Who were present at the conversation spoken of in your
examination-in-chief as being had with the officers of Regis-
tration ?
A. When I went first to the door, none were there except
the registers, who were all asleep—at least I thought so; I
think afterwards they said they were; Mr. Taylor went in
with me afterwards, but he came out before the conversation
commenced; during the conversation no one was present but
the registers; Mr. Holten was not there when I first went to
the door, but the other two registers were; Mr. Holten was
present during the conversation.
To the first cross-interrogatory :
A. I regretted the war all the time; I was opposed to it
the time; was sorry there was one gotten up.
2d.
A. I was sorry that Fort Sumter fell.
3d.
A. I don't remember expressing any.
4th.
A. I never expressed any joy over any of the battles on
cither side.
5th.
A. Don't know that I have ever expressed any about
either.
