living about some county; that whenever I got my discharge
I would bring it down; on Monday I showed it to Mr. White,
one of the Registers, who said it was all right; I told him to
keep it and show it to the Board; no, said he, it's all right;
1 thought I was Registered; alter finding my name was nut on.
the list, after the election I went to see Mr. White and Mr.
Purnell Johnson, Loth Registers; I asked them why they had.
treated me so? they said some one came forward- and. swore
he didn't consider me a Union man; my reply was—you
know that I voted for McClellan', last fall, that if they had
wanted proof that I was a Union man I could bring the
strongest Secesh. or Union man in Annamessex, where I had
been soldiering, to prove it, I asked who that person was, lie
wouldn't tell me, but I might find out; my reply, as your
witnesses are all on one side no show at all for me.

A. Did not vote; would have voted for Franklin; I ap-
plied., not, knowing I was not Registered.

Special Interrogatory:
Q. In what contest did you bear arms?
A. In Captain Long's Company—Company K, First Reg.
Volunteers, in the recent war.
Q. Did you charge the Registers, when yon enquired, the
reasons for your exclusion, with excluding you for voting
for McClellan ?
A. I said you knew how I was going to vote, and that's
the reason why you rejected me; don't remember their mak-
ing any reply.
(This question and answer objected to by the Contest-
ant, on the ground that at the time of this conversa-
tion the persons spoken of were rot Registers.)
Cross-Examination.
Q. How long have you resided in Worcester county ?
A. Since a week after the election.
Q., At what time and what term did you enlist in the ser-
vice of U. S.
A. I enlisted for three years or dining the war, unless
sooner discharged..
Q.. At what time were you discharged ?
A. August, 1864.
Q. During the time of your service, were or not your
company and regiment engaged in any battle
A. Part of the regiment and a part of the company were
at Gettysburg, but I was not.
