142 Was there or not on the last day of the sitting of the Registers a great many pressing their claims for registra- tion? A. Yes, sir. Be-direct: On the day of your last appearance before the Registers, did or not they appoint a day alter the time allotted by law and their advertisement, and at a different place from the one advertised, for any person or persons to meet them for the purpose of taking the oath? If so, for whom was such ap- pointment made? [Contestant objects to this question and answer.] A. They did appoint the next day for Mr. Crawford and Mr. Smith only to take the oath, at Mr. Mills' house, saying they ('Crawford and Smith) were entitled to take the oath. Jesse Davis the witness produced lor the claimant, being duly sworn, answers and says : 1st. ' A. About ten years; been a voter ten years; resided in 1865 in Quantico District. 2d. A. Did apply. I applied on the two last days of their sit- ting. Mr. Pusey asked me if I had made up my mind to take the oath; told him I had. lie told me it was not worth. while to ask rue all those questions, as he believed I was a I Union man at the breaking out of the rebellion. I said I was and am yet. He said he knew I had heard all those questions; that it was not worth- while to ask them all, and he asked me two, which I answered. I left, supposing I would be registered, but I afterwards found I was not on the published list. On the last day they met for correction I |
