1st. How long have you resided in Somerset county; how
long have you been a voter therein; in what election district
did you reside in 1865?
A. Fifty-four years; been a voter since 1835; resided in
1865 in tenth election district.
3d. Did you or not apply for registration, and did you or
not take the oath; were you notified of' any charge against,
you; were you confronted with any witnesses?
. A. I did apply; tool? the oath; was notified of no charge;
was confronted with no witnesses.
3d. You are recorded upon the Registration book of the
tenth district as refusing to answer questions; did you or
not answer every question that the officers of Registration
put to you? „
A
. I did; after they got through asking the questions, I
answered them all; one of the Registration officers, Mr.
Parks, turned round to the other, Mr. Vetra, and said,
"He's honest, isn't he?" Mr. Vetra said, "He is;" I then
asked them if they expected me to come up there and swear
to a lie; they both observed, "No;" "I have too good" (or
too great, I;; am not, positive which word they used,) "an
opinion of you."
4th. Who was the other officer of Registration, and was
he present?
A. Mr. Wilson; he was not present; Mr. Parks told me
Wilson was drunk that morning, and they would not allow
him to sit.
(Mr. Parks' statement objected to by Contestant as hear-
say.)
5th. Were you or not present when Robert T. Ritchie ap-
plied. for registration to the same officers? if yea, state
whether or not lie answered all the questions the said officers
put to him.
A. I was present during the whole time; Mr. Ritchie an-
swered all the questions they put to him.
6th. Where you or not one of the judges of election on the
7th of November last? and if yea, was the paper now shown
you and filed this day by Dr. Thomas W. Stone, handed to
you, and if yea, by whom and when ?
A. I was one of the judges; the paper referred to was
handed to me in town by Mr. John Wilson, one of the regis-
ters, on the Monday before the election; lie asked me if I was
not. one of the judges, and then asked me to take it down to
Hungra Neck, that it was the list of voters.
