A. We asked witnesses to name over every person in the
district they would testify against as disloyal.
13th. Do you or not remember any specific act or word
charged against any of the persons entered as disloyal on the
Registration book ?
A. Yes. I remember one man.
14th. Who was be, and what was the act?
A. Thomas Keely, son of James F. Keely.
15th. What was the specific charge against him ?
A. That he had wished the Merrimac might go to Bal-
timore and blow Fort McHenry to hell.
16th. Do you remember any other charge against any
other persons ?
A. None except James F; Keeby, who .said he wouldn't
answer questions to criminate himself; and didn't answer
our questions.
17th. Where is Mr. Richard 0. Wallace ?
A. In Baltimore I think, frozen up.
18th. Where ia Mr. McCoy?
A. In Washington, i think he told me he was a clerk in
one of the Departments
19th. At what time did he go to Washington?
A. Two or three weeks before the Registration commenced,
I reckon.
28th. Do you know whether he had been appointed a
Registration officer before he went to Washington ?
A. I do not.
21st. Did you or not write your name subscribe your
name to the- oath on the book of Registration ?
A. I did not; Michael Webster wrote my name there, by
my authority; I can't write nor read writing.
Cross-Examination :
1st. At the commencement of your official labors who
acted as Registers?
A. Mr'. Wallace and myself, Mr. McDorman the other re-
gister named in the commission never qualified.
2d. You stated in your direct examination that Mr. McCoy
was subsequently commissioned. and took the prescribed oath
before Mr. William McDorman, a Justice of the Peace in and
for Somerset county; did Mr. H. McCoy after taking the oath-
subscribe his name on the registration book?
A. He did; but on reflection I am not certain whether it
was as Clerk or as Registration Officer that I saw him take
the oath.
