I do not remember hearing Mr. Franklin say anything on the abstract question of secession. Cross-examination: Question. You state that during the war you have had repeated conversations with Mr. Franklin; and that lie has insisted he was a Union man; during all that time have you ever heard him rejoice at a triumph of the Federal arms? A. No, sir Q. During all that time have you ever heard him express a regret at the defeat of the Federal arms? A. No, sir. Q During all that time have you ever heard him express a desire for the success of' the Federal arms over the Confed- erate arms ? A. No, sir. Q. During the war have you ever heard him utter one ex- pression of encouragement to the Government in that strug- gle for its existence ? A. No, sir, not that I recollect of.
