then asked if I was not under the influence of liquor, when I
first applied lor registration; I answered not so but that I
had a distinct recollection of all that occurred between us and
that nothing had been objected to my answers nor any diffi-
culty in relation to them save his hesitancy to my answer
about the battle of Hull's Run; after apologising for con-
suming their time and excusing myself on the importance of
the case to me I left the court-house; I found on the Monday
following that my name was placed amongst the qualified
voters. (Contestant objected, to the statements of Mr. Duer
as hearsay.)

Where did you reside previously to your coining to Mary-
land, in 1862?
A. In St. Louis, Missouri.
Did you return to St. Louis in 1862 ?
A. No;* I returned in March or February, l8t13.
How long did you remain then in St. Louis?
A. About two months, then I returned to this county.
Did you leave St. Louis in 1802 or in 1803, at the instance
of the military authorities, or for any political reason ?
A. I did not.
Since you have resided in Maryland, have you not desired
or expressed a desire for the acknowledgment of the Con-
federate States by any Foreign power ?
A. I have not.
Have you not desired, and expressed the desire for the ces-
sation of hostilities, and the acknowledgment of the Confed-
erate States by the United States Government ?
A I have not.
To the first Cross-interrogatory filed :
A. I don't know I expressed any regret; I was very sorry
any such battle ever took place.
