Cross examination;
Question, Are you a registered, qualified voter in the dis-
trict in which you reside?
Answer. My name doesn't appear on the paper professing
to he a list of qualified voters.
Q. Was not the Henry I. Denston spoken of hy you in
your direct examination, brought by you before the Regis-
ters to prove your loyalty ?
A. Can't say he was brought there by me; should have
chosen smother witness, as he knew too littie of me; but he
was present, whether they or I referred to him, can't say ;
believe they did.
Q. You did not refer to Henry I Denston ?
A. I did not.
The above has been read to me and is correct.

Thomas W. H. White, a witness called for and on behalf
of Air. John R. Franklin, being duly sworn deposes and
yays ;
To the first interrogatory :
A. That he has resided in Somerset county nearly thirty-
four years and been a voter therein about twelve years resid-
ed last year in Trappe District, in Somerset county.
2d.
A. That I did so apply was notified in no way of any
charge; was confronted in no way with any 'witnesses; they
asked me if I would take the oaith, said I would; then they
handed if to me, I read it, said again I would take it, then
they handred me a Princess Anne paper (evidence of the pa-
per objected to unless produced) "and asked me if I could
stand the preamble that was in that; I told them I could
with one exception, that was touching upon my sympathy
for the Southern people; I thought that no Christian man
could answer that as what they termed satisfactory, they said,,
well .sir, you have saved us the trouble of swearing you.
