32 17th. The book shows him to be "known by the board:" had you ever heard Mr. Wise express a desire for the success of those in armed hostility to the United States? A. I never did to my knowledge. 18th. Did either of the registers testify before yon of hav- ing heard Mr. Wise express such desire, or to any other act or word of disloyalty to the Government? A. I don't recollect now: I don't recollect all those cases. 19th. Did you notify Isaac D. Jones on the day of his ap- plication and taking the oath, or at any other time, in per- son or by summons, of any charge against his loyalty, until the day of review,, when he appeared voluntary to enquire into the cause of his exclusion? A. Not to my knowledge. His case was known to the board. 20th. Did not the board inform Mr. Jones, on the day of review, that the cause of his exclusion was a speech of Mr. Jones, in discussion with Mr. Crisfield, made in the court house of Princess Anne, in January, 1861. A. That speech had some weight in his case, but the more particular part was what James Hayman knew in his case. 21st. Did or not you inform Mr. Jones that that speech was the cause of disqualification? A. We did not. 22d. Did not Mr. James Hayman, in the presence of your- self and Mr. John H. Stewart, inform Mr. Jones that that speech was the cause of his disqualification; that he, Mr. James Hayman, had heard Mr. Jones talk about the war until he was disgusted, but could not remember any partic- ular thing he said ? A. Not to my knowledge. Mr. Hayman did say that he could not remember any words; but it was in a spirit of rejoicing over a victory gained by the Confederates. 23d. Did or not Mr. Hayman say that he had ever heard Mr. Jones express his adhesion to the enemies of the Govern- ment, or express a desire that they should succeed in over- throwing the Government ? A. Not to my knowledge; but Mr. Hayman said that he had heard him say enough to satisfy him of his disloyalty. 24th. What did Mr. Hayman say he had heard Mr. Jones say? A. I don't recollect. 25th. How many person? did you notify of charges of disloyalty, and give opportunity for disproving ? |
