20 75th. Who was the witness against Wm. F. Stevens, and what, did he testify? A. William T. Marriner. I don't recollect his testi- mory. 76th. Did William Duer appl for registration? A. He was there, but did not take the oath. 77th. Did he not apply to take the oath, and refuse because of an exposition given by you or one of your colleagues ? A. If so, I don't recollect it. 78th. Did not you, or one of your colleagues, tell him that no man could take that oath conscientiously who was not willing to lay down his life for the Government, and did he not turn away, saying, if that was so, he could not take it? A. To the best of my knowledge, it was not. I don't re- collect any such conversation. 79th. Did Thormas Trehearn, who is entered P.S disloyal by his own statements, admit that he had ever said or done anything against the Government; if so, what ? A.
