of the several witnesses brought before him. Of the witnesses then
and there examined, to Charles S. Marshall and Wm. J. Porter, the
whole series of the aforementioned questions were propounded,
and their depositions were intended to be responsive to them. To
the other witnesses, the eighth, ninth and tenth only of the series
were propounded, and their depositions were intended to be re-
sponsive to them.
The Honorable Thomas A. Spence was present in presence of
his attorney, Samuel A. Graham, Esq., throughout the examina-
tions, except on Monday, the first day of January, 1866. The
Honorable John W. Crisfield, A. C. Miles, Esq., and L. L.
Waters, Esq., as the attorneys of the Hon. John. R. Franklin,
were present only occasionally during the examination of Tues-
day and Wednesday, the 26th and 27th December, 1865.
The depositions of Thomas S. Hodson and George H. Rich-
ardson, were written and subscribed by the respective deponents.
All of the other depositions were written by the clerks by whom
they are severally attested, who were for that purpose appointed
by me and sworn, fairly to write down and transcribe the deposi-
tions, and the said depositions were subscribed by the respective
deponents. No other witnesses being before me to be examined,
and the Hon. Thomas A. Spence having declined to offer any
other, I this day close the examination.
With this certificate, I transmit to you the certificate of notice
and the proof the service thereof. A paper writing made part of
the testimony, marked " Exhibit A. T. A. S.," and all of the de-
positions of the witnesses examined before me, as stated in this
Certificate.
