fie purpose, viz: "expense of distributing the resources of -Maryland," I did not feel at liberty to use any of it for office and many other personal expenses. There is yet re- maining in the treasury about one-third of it, whilst my indi- vidual l expenses have exceeded the entire State appropriation. In conclusion I beg leave to submit to your inspection the very large number of letters I helve received, winch more clearly than. I can state it, manifests the interest awakened abroad in favor of Maryland. The following, taken pro- miscuously from the mass, will present concisely the tenor of the whole. CENTRAL PARK, Office of Superintending Engineer, NEW YORK, October 2, 1865. W. R. COLE, Esq., Baltimore, Md. Sir:—Please find enclosed fifty cents, and stamp for which ease send me your catalogue. It appears from the pamphlet which you sent me, that most of the farms in your State are too large for the means as well as the desires of the majority of the people who would be dis- posed to emigrate, at least for those to whom I have intro- duced the subject; besides, the idea now prevails that small farms well cultivated are the most profitable. Parcels of land from ten to forty acres are the most sought for. If you have any such to offer with improvements, in a healthy loca- tion, of easy communication with markets, and on or near the water, I would be obliged if you would inform me, stating the Iowest price; also, if any small farms can be leased for a short term. with the privilege of purchasing at a fixed price. Respectfullv, C. A. GRADY. PORTCHESTER, May 17, 1865. Mr. W. R. COLE, Sir:—I want you to send me one of your pamphlets on the advantage of moving into your State. 1 think I can influence a dozen families to purchase farms in your State, if the ad- vantage is .such as to encourage it. They can bring $40,000 with them. They will want to settle near .some good market. Will you give me your advise in what place to purchase ? We want some good improved farms, and what will be the price per acre for such land ? Yours, &c., GEORGE A. PALMER. |
