Peace 6
Publique Law or any way in derogation of the Kings Authority or Interest, you knowe
what to doe according to their respective misdeameanors: wee are all here unanimously
resolved to keep the Countrye in the present Settlement till order frome his Majestye wch
wee are very Sure according to our repeated Peticons will be for A protestant government
under which alone wee recon ourselves onely Safe and to noe other will wee Submitt,
faithfully beleeving his Majesties reiterated Declarations of his great zeal for the
Protestant Interest with his royall undertakings have made good I am glad to hear ? under=
=stand his majesties particular Service as to or: pr:sent defence, is not neglected with-
you In order to which have Sent pr Capta: Browne what powder and Shott Can possible
Spare; Wee are all here very Confident that the Idle vaine discourses of Some Lost &
undone men will not Slaken yor: Loyaltye upon which Supposicon thinke needless to
add but that I am Gentlem: yor: most ffaythfull Servant Jno: Coode
if none of the Cononrs: be fit of Shall refuse the Service Capta: Smith
or Some other must be Constituted, Jno: Coode

Gentlemen Yors: by Capta: Browne: I have perused and wonder that both the Civill & Military
officers of yor: County being armed with Soe ample authority (by the ordinance of Assembly)
to Suppress all disloyall practises against their Majesties; you have so long Neglected the Calling
to account Capta: Whittington, whose practises of yt: nature are here too frequently discoursed of to
the ill example of others, as you have hitherto beene verry Loyall Soe hope you will Still Con
tinue; the wch: you Cannot better manifest then by giveing a Speedy Check to his disloyall practice
& removing him from his office; & placeing one more Loyall in his roome the which of the
Commissionrs: Soe approve of I Cannot advise to a better then Capta: Smith, underStanding ye
Cheife Military officer here hath writt at Large to you Shall ad noe further but that I am

Gent: I have a Summons from A Supremr: Authority So yt I might have all this Province I
Cannot attend allthough at this time I have a Small intermission to write this but So Confused
through the Major part of last Nights Misery & want of rest yt it is a great Doubt whether

there may be any Sence &c yet so far am Capable to answr: what is laid to my Charge thus
in brevity So Soone as I Came from Proclaimeing theire Maties &c I was by good Informacon
toulld their Maj.ties: had Sent A Packett to this Province wherein I Concluded so much of theire -
Royall pleasure was made known as wee might know how y Govermnt: Shouldd Continew
The Contents whereof wee have not bin thought worthy to know but if any thing had been
Conteined that might have Tantamennt to the Subversion of yt authority formerly noe doubt
but it had bin published wch: if to the Contrary I Cannot See well how I Can be disharged from
the trust formerly imposed more Especially if yt: Clause incerted in y late ordnance of part
relating to y Continuance of the officers be Concluded Concidered Nether was it ever Known
That A Sheriff Coulld Serve without taking the usuall oath y law provides Soe yt to Conclude
Since their most gracious Maties: hath not dissented to the late governmt: under y Lord
Baltemore (by any wayes as wee Can understand) they assented for (--- doe it wth Safety)
I had rather Serve the precepts bearing the Stile Royall than any ---- I think in Conscience
I Cannot doe without an Authorty springinging from Some of all
&c I mean the King but notwithstanding if any wish -nd y Diett a---- as Such
----ines might be taken as might bring & hold ye Credit to all in Authority by cause
