188 Their Majesties: per Recognizance Maryland Somerset County Ssc. Whereas agt. Complaint is this day to witt ye 17th. day of October Teague: Riggin. Senior. - - - - - ano 1690. made by Wm: Matthews in the behalfe of his Mother law Mary: Riggen, that is to say That Notwithstanding as his very late assumpsit and promise of Regulating his notorious Crimes and (misdimeanors) and inhumanity towards his said Wife, whome in the presence of my Selfe, and some others he did times disowne for his wife, but owned her Children to be his and many other barbarous and vile actions (by him) laid to his charge, and proof ready, yet having her life threatned &c. The woman was willing to see and (trust) him further, rather then Seek the ruine of her family if their might be any hopes, but he since that hath Beaten and Evill entreated her, that of her life she doth despair &c. - - - - - - These are there in their Maties names to will and require, as also to Charge and Command you William: Matthews that imediatly you cause the sd Teague Riggen Senior. to appear before me to answer the above sd complaint, and yr Sumons as well the Complainant Mary: Riggin, as Samuel: Collins, Edward. Dickinson, and Thomas: Nichols Evidences, and here of yu are not to fail as you will answer the contempt at your peril. Sealed C To Wm: Matthews who is espetially appointed to serve this Warrant. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Deposition of Edward: Dickinson aged 25 years or thereabout. This Deponente saith yt being at the house of Teague Riggon Senior of Morumscoe the 7th day of October 1689. after night the sd Teague took occasion to quarel wth his wife, calling her toad, bitch and whore, oftentimes (warning) her not to come into his house that night, she going out of the door, he took in hand a piece of wood, about (4) inches square. and 18 inches long and did heave it at her with great force but it happened to fall short about foot of her, and with the force that it hit the ground, made it rebound about a foot above the ground after (he) went to bed his wife came to his Chamber door, asking him if he would lett her putt her Children to bed and ( )would not misuse her, he told her she might come and lye there, for he would take daylight to bang her.the next (morn)ing she shewd her arms which were made black by his pinches (as she said) he then told her, if she had not made (such) hast of her way he would have made her buttocks black, calling her oftentimes as before mentioned she desireing that he give her a maintenance if she could not live quietly with him, he answered she might go like a whore, for one (whore) was as good to him as another, asking her where was her Certificate whore she was marryed telling her she was not his wife after this there was complaint made to mr ffrancis: Jenkins who issued out a warrant to cause the sd Teague to come before him to answer the said complaint, Teague Riggin aforesd answered the said complaint this assumption that he would mend his course of life, and be kind to his wife he was discharged, the morrow being 9th of October he fell into the same extreams of passion with his wife, calling her harlott & whore and other base (passions) strikeing her once or more upon the face with severall other abuses. - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Deposition of Samuel: Collins about 43 years of age. This Deponent saith that being at work at the house of Teague Riggen Senior. of Morumscoe, upon the 7th day of october Anno. 1689 after night the said Teague Riggon quarrelled with his wife Mary:Riggen, calling her oftentimes, Toad (bitch) and whore, and turnd her out of doors, warning her not to come into his house that night, she going out of the door he took in his hands a peice of wood of about 4 Inches square or thereabout, and about 18 inches long ( )as I could guess, and did heave it at her with great force, but it happenned to fall short about halfe a foot of her and with the force that it hitt the ground made rebound above a foot from the ground, after that he went to bed his wife Mary came to his chamber door asking him if he would lett her putt her children to bed, and yt he would not misuse her, he told her she might come and lye there that night, for he would take day light to bang her or words (to that) purpose. next morning I being a bed with young Teague Riggen and Edward Dickenson (in the loft) I heard a noise below (seemingly) as if there were blows given, whereupon I calld to my Bedfellows desireing them (to come down stairs) Coming down stairs, Mary Riggen shewd her arms which were (made black by ---- --and) he said, he then told her if she had not made such hast of his way he would he would have made her buttocks black, and both she desireing him to allow her a maintenance if she could not |
