of the said building, the said records and papers shall be removed thereto,
and be kept in distinct and separate apartments; and the said commissioners are
hereby directed to cause the said building to be covered with slate or tile, and a
part thereof to be paved and arched with brick or stone, of sufficient strength
and thickness to secure the said records and papers from fire, or other injury.

    II.  And be it enacted, That the justices of Baltimore county court shall levy
and assess on the assessable property of Baltimore county a sum not exceeding
five hundred pounds, with the usual commission to the sheriff for collection, to
be collected with the county levy in the years seventeen hundred and ninety-seven 
and seventeen hundred and ninety-eight, and paid to the person or persons with
whom the said commissioners shall contract.

    III.  And be it enacted, That the justices of the said county court shall contract
with the clerk of the said court for transcribing such records and papers as
are in a decayed state, and also for making one general alphabet to the land
records of the said county, and to assess the sum of money allowed for such
services on the said county, which shall be collected with the county levy; and
all records in the said office heretofore transcribed or taken from books which are
lost, or which shall be transcribed in virtue of this act, shall be deemed and
taken to be the public records of said county, and copies from such transcribed
records shall be admissible in evidence, in the same manner as if taken from the
original books.

    IV.  And be it enacted, That the justices of Baltimore county court shall levy
and assess on the assessable property of Baltimore county, for rebuilding two of
the bridges over Jones's Falls, in Baltimore-town, a sum not exceeding one
thousand pounds, with the usual commission to the sheriff for collection, to be
collected with the county levy in the years seventeen hundred and ninety-seven
and seventeen hundred and ninety-eight; which sum of one thousand pounds
shall be inclusive of the sums of money heretofore levied for the repair fo the
three bridges over Jones's Falls, in said town; and all money heretofore levied
for the repair of the lower bridge, and now unappropriated, shall be applied to
the rebuilding of the middle and upper bridges; and the sums levied and collected
in virtue of this act, and any former law, shall be paid, in equal proportions, to
the commissioners herein after named.

    V.  And be it enacted, That John Merryman, James Edwards and Charles
Jessop, or any two of them, shall be and are hereby appointed commissioners
to contract for rebuilding the upper bridge, and Harry Dorsey Gough, Henry
Nichols and Peter Diffindaffer, or any two of them, shall be and are hereby
appointed, commissioners for rebuilding the middle bridge; and in case any vacancy
shall happen in the said appointment of commissioners, before the said
bridges shall be rebuilt, the justices of Baltimore county court shall supply such 
vacancy, so often as need may require, until the accomplishment of the object
intended by this act.

CHAP. LVI.
An ACT to incorporate a company for building a bridge over
                    Jone's Falls, in Baltimore-town.

30.
WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, that the erecting
of a good stone or brick bridge over Jone's Falls, in Baltimore-town,
at the place commonly known by the name of the Lower
Bridge, would add greatly to the convenience and improvement of the said town,
and essentially promote the interest of the same; therefore,

    II.  Be it enacted,by the General Assembly of Maryland, That John
O'Donnell, Thomas McElderty, Cumberland Dugan, Richard Lawson and
Richard Caton, be appointed to receive subscriptions for erecting said bridge;
and that three weeks notice be given in one of the public papers of Baltimore-town
