examining the ballots, returned
and reported, that John Eager Howard, Esquire, was duly elected.
It is thereupon declared in the senate, that John Eager
Howard, Esquire, is duly elected a senator
to represent this state in the senate of the United States.
The senate adjourns until to-morrow morning 10 o'clock.

R D A Y,
December 10, 1796.
THE senate met. Present the same members as
on yesterday, except the honourable Charles
Ridgely, of Hampton, Esquire, who had leave of absence. The proceedings
of yesterday
were read.
The letter from his excellency the governor, and also
the letter dated in council, with the statement
of the armouries and plan of a new armoury to be built at Frederick town,
were sent to the
house of delegates by the clerk.
The clerk of the house of delegates delivers to
the clerk of the senate a bill, entitled, An act to
ratify and make valid the sales of land made by Daniel of Saint Thomas
Jenifer, while agent for
this state, thus endorsed; " By the house of delegates, December 9,
1796: Read the first time and
" ordered to lie on the table.
" By order,

" By the house of delegates, December 10, 1796: Read the second time
by especial order and will
" pass.
" By order,
W. HARWOOD, clk."
Which was read the first and second time by especial order and will pass.
The president communicates to the senate the petition
of sundry inhabitants of Baltimore-town,
praying that a law may pass incorporating a company for the purpose of
building three stone bridges
over Jones's Falls; and also a letter of this day from his excellency the
governor, enclosing a letter
from the president of the United States respecting a loan to be made to
the commissioners of the city
of Washington; which were severally read and referred to the consideration
of the house of delegates,
and, together with the above-mentioned bill, were sent thither by the clerk.
The resolution concerning a tract of land called Widow's
Lot was read the second time and
dissented from.
On motion, ORDERED, That the bill, entitled, An
act to lay out certain roads, and authorising
certain public landings, in Worcester county, be committed to the honourable
Littleton Dennis and
John S. Purnell, Esquires, to consider and report thereon.
The bill, entitled, An act for recording a patent
therein mentioned, was read the second time
and will pass with the proposed amendment.
Amendment proposed. Strike out from the word
"acquired" in the 16th line of the 2d page to
the end of the bill, and insert " to the whole or any part of the said
tract of land so as aforesaid patented."
The bill, entitled, An act to enable the vestry of Christ
Church parish, in Calvert county, to sell
and dispose of certain land therein mentioned, was read the second time
and will pass with the proposed
amendments.
Amendments proposed. In the 4th line of the
3d page strike out the words " the sum of three
hundred dollars," and insert " such sum as may be necessary for said
purposes, provided the same do
not exceed the sum of one thousand dollars." In the eighth line of
the 3d page strike out the words
" six hundred" and insert " two thousand." In the 13th line of
the 3d page, after the word "church"
insert " and in erecting buildings and augmenting the improvements
on the said tract of land called
Charles Gift."
The clerk of the house of delegates delivers to the
clerk of the senate the following resolution:
By the HOUSE of DELEGATES, December 10, 1796.
RESOLVED, That the governor be authorised to draw on
the treasurer of the western shore of thus
state for a sum not exceeding one hundred dollars to defray the expences
of the Catawba Indians in
and through this state on their way to Philadelphia, and for reimbursement
thereof to apply to the
executive of the United States.

order, assented to, and sent to the house of
delegates by the clerk.
The honourable Uriah Forrest, Esquire, has leave of
absence.

The resolution concerning a tract of land called Widow's
Lot, the bill, entitled, An act for recording
a patent therein mentioned, with the amendment thereto, and the bill, entitled,
An act to
enable the vestry of Christ Church parish, in Calvert county, to sell
and dispose of certain lands
therein mentioned, with the amendments thereto, were sent to the house
of delegates by the clerk.
