[Nov. 20] DEBATES 1011

ally with this heritage of democracy, from
resentfulness of it failures, from manipu-
lation of its weaknesses, Good Lord pre-
serve us. From ingratitude and carelessness
toward Thee Who art the only source of
liberty and brotherhood, Good Lord, de-
liver us.

Father of all men, in Whom every family
on earth is named, Thou knowest the soul
of each human being. We pray for all in
public life. From the conflict of voices let
just decisions flow. From the human temp-
tation to serve self interest and from the
ease of confusing personal with public good,
0 God, deliver them, for their strength is
in the search for peace.

We pray for all who are dear to us. We
who enjoy the demands of a public life ac-
knowledge that it is our children, friends
and family who often bear quietly its cost
of separation and loneliness. Grant to each
son and daughter and wife or husband here
represented the guidance and the safety
for which we yearn. And grant to each
father, mother, wife or husband here pres-
ent a deeper humanity. Thus let the hours
spent in the circle of our families be filled
with helpfulness and love. And we pray for
all who are affected by our work. Make us
mindful of the true needs of every father,
every mother, every child in the society
that is to be.

0 God, Who art the Author of time it-
self, a thousand years in Thy sight are but
a moment. Before Thee the nations rise
and pass away. Yet each honor is of eternal
significance. Show us both the grandeur,
the urgency and the transitory nature of
our work. For our time is short and the
days speed on. So teach us to number our
days that we may apply our hearts to wis-
dom, and let the beauty of the Lord, our
God be upon us; and establish Thou the
work of our hands upon us, here; the work
of our hands, establish Thou it.

Mindful of Thy Son Whose life and work
indelibly changed the world, even though
his days on earth were few, we make these
prayers.

Amen.
