&8 fundamental, as neccasary as any of those contained in
the Declaration of Rights which we have for the most part
adopted in this Convention, that it is co-extensive and
conflated with the rights of free speech and assembly
and tht it is just as necessary and rooreso today than the
prohibitions in our Consti.tution written 100 years ago
against involontary servitude and more direct, means of Heep-
ing people uner the domination of others.
We have, during the past week?, spoken of many
things which belong in or should be out of a Constitution.
At this juncture of o deliberations, although I never had
any doubts of the appropriateness of a right to organize
and bargain collectively in the Constitution, I have utterly
none whatever, we have in the new Constitution given space
to the spirit of conservation, we have mandated that the
consumers shall be protected against unfair business
practices, we have decreed that elected officials be honest,
we have been assured that farmers will not be dispossessed
of their lands by unfair taxation and yesterday we determined
that while people may be incarcerated pending trial, that
their property must be compensated for when it is damaged.
