election last spring, and she has been reading the draft
and studying the issues just as the rest of us have
been doing.
When she was not elected, the Democratic
Women of Maryland -- I get the organizations confused,
but I think it is called the Democratic Women's Clubs
of Maryland -- appointed her to be their president, to
watch the proceedings down here and report back to them,
so she has been studying along with us.
In summary, I think Mrs. Smith has the ability
we need down here to help us with the job that has been
assigned to us, and she brings a broad point of view,
and really represents the interests of the people in the
Third District.
There were 65 candidates in the election in our
District. Eight were elected. Mrs. Smith was the ninth
candidate.
Mr. President, I therefore nominate Mrs.
