    On progression in reading the said bill, the question was put, That the following clause be
struck out of the said bill?  " And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the sheriff, under
the penalty of fifty dollars, to provide for each district, and cause to be delivered to the judge
or judges of the election previous to or at its commencement; two blank books, properly ruled,
for entering the votes, and if it be a sheriff's election, a box receiving the ballots."  The

So it was determined in the negative.
    On further progression in reading the said bill, the question was put That the following clause
be struck out? " And be it enacted, That if any candidate, at any election to be held in virtue
of this act, or any other person or persons whatever, shall give or bestow, directly or indirectly
promise to give or bestow, any gift or reward to secure any persons vote or ballot at any such
election, or shall keep, or suffer to be kept, any house, tent, booth, or other accommodation, in
any part of any district at any time during the day of holding such election, and before the close
thereof, at his or their expence, where any victuals or intoxicating liquors shall be gratuitously
given or dealt out to voters, every such candidate or other persons so offending, shall, on conviction
thereof in the county court of the county wherein such offence may be committed, be
fined, at the discretion of the court, a sum not exceeding five hundred dollars, and suffer such
imprisonment as the court may adjudge, not exceeding six months."  The yeas and nays being
