sub-title "Sheriff," and to re-enact said Sections to read as
follows:

Sheriff.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections two hundred and ninety-six, two hun-
dred and ninety-seven and two hundred and ninety-eight of
Article 17, of the Code of Public Local Laws of the State of
Maryland, title "Prince George's County," sub-title "Sher-
iff," be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted, so as to
read as follows:

Shall appoint
guards for the
safe keeping
of prisoners
in jail.
|
Sec. 296. Whenever the Sheriff of Prince George's County
shall think it necessary for the safe keeping of persons con-
fined in jail to have a guard or guards to said jail, he shall
report the fact to the resident judge of the Circuit Court for
said county, and if the said judge shall think the necessity
for such guard or guards exists, he shall authorize, in writ-
ing, the Sheriff to appoint some proper person or persons as
such guard, and shall state in said order the length of time
for which said guard or guards is or are to act, and whether

for day or night, or both, and for the time the said guard or
guards shall actually serve, he or they shall receive each
one dollar for every day and one dollar for every night; the
amounts to be levied by the County Commissioners of Prince
George's County for the use of said persons so serving at the
regular levy -lay ing term in each year; the amounts due each
person to be certified to by the Sheriff and approved by the
judge passing the order and not to be levied otherwise.

Sec. 297. Be it further enacted, That whenever there is no
resident judge the Sheriff shall make his application as above
to the judges of the Circuit of which Prince George's forms
part, a majority of whom may pass such order as a resident
judge would be authorized to pass under this Act.

Removal for
cause.
|
Sec. 298. And be it further enacted, That any guard or
guards so appointed by the Sheriff may be removed at the
will of the Sheriff whenever said officer thinks the guard or
guards is or are not properly performing his or their duty.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect from the date of its passage.
