and two to be selected from those who fought with distinction
on behalf of the South — whose duty it shall be to erect in the
State Library, or other suitable and conspicuous room at the
State Capital, suitable cases, to be composed of metal and
plate-glass, of sufficient capacity to receive the various battle-
flags, with their staff, carried by Maryland organizations of
infantry, cavalry and artillery during said Civil War, and to
be so arranged that proper metal cards, with letters not less
than one inch in height, can be placed to show the number of
the battalion, regiment or battery to whom said battle-flags
belonged, as well as inscriptions on streamers appended to the
standards, showing the various engagements in which the flag
was carried.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the
Commission, after the completion of said cases and their
approval by the Governor of Maryland, to apply to the organi-
zations who have the custody of the said Maryland battle-flags
in the name and in behalf of the State of Maryland, requesting
the delivery of said battle-flags to the State of Maryland for
safe-keeping and preservation as long as the Commonwealth
exiscs.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said flags when so deliv-
ered to the Commission shall be carefully taken down, wrapped,
packed and transported to the Capital of the State, thence
unpacked, carefully cleaned, as far as practicable, and erected
in said cases, properly inscribed, etc., as directed in Section
one of this Act.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the sum of fifteen hundred
dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, is hereby
appropriated out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise
appropriated, to be expended under the direction of said Com-
mission for the purpose herein specified, and the Treasurer of
the State is hereby directed to pay all vouchers submitted and
approved by said Commissioners, or a majority of them, in
accordance with this Act; that is, for cases, transportation, labor,
etc., as well as the necessary expenses of the Commissioners.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That as soon as the said battle-flags
have been obtained and cared for as herein provided for, they
shall be formally turned over to the Governor of Maryland,
who shall direct that the care and custody thereof in the future
shall be under the supervision of the Adjutant General of
Maryland, and the function of said Battle-flag Commissioners
shall cease. The said Commissioners shall serve without
