by fine or otherwise compel the owner or proprietor of any lot
or lots to pave or repave the sidewalks or footways of any
streets adjacent to said lot or lots, and to set curbs along the
same, agreeable to the ordinances now in force in said town,
or that may hereafter be passed in relation thereto; (8) to
cause the streets, ways and alleys, the watercourses, drains,
sewers and gutters to be macadamized or paved, kept in repair

and cleaned; provided, that this sub-section and sub-section
seven shall not apply to streets through property which has
not been developed and improved by the erection of houses
thereon; (9) to control and protect the public buildings,
grounds and property of the town; (10) to establish, erect,
maintain and regulate a station-house or lock-up in said town
for the confinement of the violators of the laws and
ordinances thereof, and also such other buildings for
municipal purposes as they may deem necessary and

proper; (11) to levy a tax and impose a license on dogs
and bitches, and to prevent horses, cattle, goats and swine
from running at large in the streets of the town and
through the vacant building lots thereof; (12) to regulate
and control all offensive trades, manufacturers and traffic in
offensive fertilizers and other commodities; (13) to prohibit hog
pens and slaughter-houses within the limits of the town; (14)
to license, regulate and restrain peddlers, hucksters, wagons,
liveries, theatricals, circus troops, hawkers, venders, pool and
billiard-rooms and bowing alleys; (15) to preserve the clean-
liness, health, safety, peace and good order of the town, and
to protect the lives and property of the citizens thereof;
(16) to punish and suppress vagrancy, gambling and the sale
or giving away of spirituous or fermented liquors or lager
beer or intoxicating drinks of any kind within the limits of
said town; (17) to purchase, receive and hold such real and
personal property as may be necessary or proper for muncipal
purposes, and to control, dispense of and convey the same
tor the benefit of the town; also to establish a market and to
regulate the same, and to license the sale of marketable com-
modities. (18.) They shall also have power to provide for

the codification of all ordinances of said town, and to cause
the same to be printed, together with the charter of the town;
(19) and to suppress, abate and discontinue all nuisances
within the corporate limits of said town, and for the purpose
of carrying out all foregoing powers they may pass all ordi-
nances from time to time necessary, and to insure the observ-
ance of said ordinances they may affix thereto reasonable
