ment and guidance of the peace officers of the town to give
instructions to secure the observance of this provision. It shall
be the duty of the chief bailiff, the sub bailiffs and the police
force, as peace officers, to maintain and preserve peace, good
order and good conduct within the limits of said town, and in
all parts thereof, and among all persons found therein. They
shall repress, prevent and put down disorderly conduct to the
disturbance of the public peace, breaches of the peace,
gambling of all kinds, the unlawful sale of intoxicating
drinks, and any and all other unlawful and criminous acts
and conduct whatsoever within the corporate limits of said
town. Upon the application of the chief bailiff and sub-
bailiff, or any policeman thereof, for a warrant of arrest, and
upon the information on oath of such officer or any other per-
son who appears with or at the direction of said officer to lay
the information, the justice of the peace having jurisdiction
and authorized to issue such warrants shall issue the same,
directed to said officer, commanding him to make the arrest
of the person named in the information, and said officer shall
execute and return said warrant or writ, but he shall serve no
other process in the case, except the warrant of arrest. The
fines imposed in any case on the trial and conviction of a
defendant, for an offense committed within the limits of the
said town, wherein the original warrant or writ for the arrest
of the same was directed to any of the peace officers of said
town, shall be paid to the Commissioners, less any part thereof
appropriated by the law to and informer, or for providing a
library or any charitable object.

If between 8 o'clock P.M. on one day and sunrise on the
next day, or at any time on Sunday, the chief bailiff and
sub-bailiffs, or any policeman of said town, has occasion to
arrest any person for an offense committed therein, whether
the offense was committed in the presence of the officer or
otherwise, and the officer believes that under the circum-
stances of the case he ought to make the arrest without delay,
said officer may make the arrest without a warrant. In any
such case he may take the party to the county jail until morn-
ing. If it be made after 8 o'clock at night or on Sunday,
upon the request of the sheriff, the officer making the arrest
shall have authority to give him a commitment authorizing
him to hold the party till, at some hour on the following day
if not Sunday, he can be taken before a magistrate, which
commitment shall protect the sheriff from all liability. The
chief bailiff and sub-bailiff, and any policeman of said town
shall be entitled to take recognizance of a party so arrested,
