COMPENSATION OF THE MUNICIPAL POLICE.

Compensation
|
63. The several members of the police force appointed, as
aforesaid, between the fifteenth day of September and the
first day of October in each year shall be entitled to receive
such compensation as may be stated at the time of their
appointment; provided, that none of them shall receive over
forty dollars per month; and if no other sum is named at
their appointment, they shall, until notice to the contrary,
severally receive said sum per month. At the expiration of
each month's service, the board shall give to each policeman
an order on the Town Clerk and Treasurer for his month's
pay, and said order shall be paid on the presentation thereof
to the Town Clerk and Treasurer.

Regulating
pay of bailiffs
and police.

If any policeman resigns, dies, or is for cause removed from
office, he shall not be entitled to any pay after the date of
his death, resignation or removal from office, and if less than
a whole months' pay is then due he shall receive pay only
for the part of the month during which he rendered service.
No chief bailiff, sub-bailiff or policeman shall be entitled to
receive any compensation for serving warrants, or writs of
arrest, or for making arrests, but such service shall be ren-
dered without charge; and if any officer directly or indirectly,
or by collusion with any constable or other officer, receives
in any form, or under any pretense, any pay or reward therefor,
he shall be at once discharged from his office, and if the Com-
missioners have reason to believe that any such officer has
violated this provision , they shall at once have an investigation,
and if they find any officer guilty, they shall impose said
penalty on him; provided, that nothing herein shall prevent
any of said officers from receiving or being paid any reward for
the arrest or apprehension of any offender, or from receiving
or being paid any part of a fine payable to an informer.

64. The chief bailiff, the sub-bailiffs and the policemen of
the town, as peace officers thereof, shall well and faithfully
perform the duties imposed on them by law and by ordinance,
and by the rules and regulations made by the Commissioners
for their government and guidance in performing their work
and duty. But as peace officers they are required to use care,
prudence, judgment and good sense, so that they may not
subject individuals, without sufficient cause, to arrest and im-
prisonment, or the public to the cost and expense of needless
criminal prosecutions; and it shall be the duty of the Com-
missioners, in passing rules and regulations for the govern-
