answered in every court of law or equity; to make and use a
common seal, and to alter and renew the same at pleasure; to
make and adopt a constitution and by-laws for the government
of said body corporate and its affairs; provided the same shall
not be in conflict with the Constitution and laws of this State
and of the United States; to elect officers and directors, and
to do every other act or thing to carry into effect the provi-
sions of this Act or to promote the objects and designs of the
corporation.

Authority to
deal in real
and personal
property.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That the said corporation is
hereby authorized and empowered to receive and hold real or
personal property by purchase, lease, gift, devise or beqnest,
for the purposes of said corporation, and to grant, dispose of,
sell, convey or lease the same, or any part thereof, as fully as
any private individual or other corporate body could or
might do.

election of

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That the members of this corpora-
tion shall annually, in the month of October, upon such day
as may be fixed by the board of directors, elect by ballot,
from among their members, a president, vice-president and
treasurer and directors, not to exceed twelve in number, who
shall hold office during such terms as may be prescribed by
the constitution or by-laws; the directors, together with the
president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary, shall con-
stitute the board of directors.
SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

AN ACT to define the powers and authority of juvenile
institutions and societies.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That all bodies incorporated or to be incorporated under
the General Laws for the purposes of the care, custody,
guardianship or protection of minors, generally or of any
particular ages or classes, have the power and authority fol-
lowing:
1. To retain children legally committed or confided to them
until the age of eighteen years in females and twenty-one
years in males.
