JOHN WALTER SMITH, ESQ., GOVERNOR.

WHEREAS, The card system of indexing and cataloguing
has been recently introduced in the State Library, and that
system thoroughly established; and

WHEREAS, Heretofore periodically new. indexes of the
books in said library have been made and published at a very
heavy expense; and

WHEREAS, In the accumulation of books, which naturally
occurs from year to year, these periodical appropriations for
the work must be regularly made, by reason of which
expense is entailed and poor results accomplished;

THEREFORE, In the line or economy and for the best
interests of those compelled to use the State Library, especially
the Court of Appeals and the lawyers practicing before said
court; therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the office of indexer and cataloguer to the State
Library be and the same is hereby created.

SEC. 2. And 1c it enacted, That the Governor, by and with
the advice of the Library Committee created by Chapter two
hundred and seventy-two of the Acts of eighteen hundred
and seventy, is authorized and empowered to appoint a person
as indexer and cataloguer of the State Library, who shall
hold his office for the period of two years, or until his suc-
cessor is duly appointed and qualified, and who shall receive

a salary of six hundred dollars per annum, payable in monthly
instalments by warrant of the Comptroller upon the Treasurer.
It shall be the duty of the said indexer and cataloguer to
attend daily at the State Library on each day that the same
is open, and there continue the work of indexing and card-
cataloguing under the system now adopted and carried on
therein, and as far as practicable keep the said work up to
date; and he shall also perform such other services (when his
time is not fully occupied in indexing and cataloguing) as shall
be required of him by the said Library Committee.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 272.
AN ACT to add three new sections to Article 23 of the Code
of Public General Laws, title "Corporations," sub-title
"General Regulations," to follow Section eighty -five, and
to be designated as Sections 85A, 85B and 85C.
