or holding of public dances, soirees, masked balls, boxing or
athletic contests, or either of them, in the City of Baltimore.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, No public dances, soiree, masked
ball, boxing or athletic contest, or other public entertainment
of like kind to or for which an admission fee shall be charged
shall be held, given or permitted in the City of Baltimore,
except upon conditions that a license or permit fee of not less
than five dollars nor more than one hundred dollars shall first
be paid to the secretary of the Board of Police Commissioners,
who are authorized to demand and receive the same for the
benefit of the special fund; provided, that nothing herein con-
tained shall interfere with any permits authorized, issued or
collected by the authority of the Mayor and City Council of
Baltimore City.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That this Act shall take effect from the date of its pas-
sage.

CHAPTER 270.
AN ACT to waive and release all the liens of the State of
Maryland upon the corpus of the Chesapeake and Ohio
Canal, upon its tolls and revenues, in favor of certain
creditors of the Canal Company.

WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Maryland, by
Chapter one hundred and thirty-six and one-half, of the Laws
of eighteen hundred and ninety-six, passed an Act entitled
an "Act to waive and release all the liens of the State of
Maryland upon the corpus of the Chesapeake and Ohio
Canal, and upon its tolls and revenues, in favor of certain
creditors of the Canal Company; and

WHEREAS, The said Act contained certain provisions in
regard to the proper proof by the owners of said judgments
and claims against the Canal Company of their said judg-
ments and claims; and

Preamble.

WHEREAS, The Honorable Frank Brown, Governor of
Maryland, previous to the passage of the said law, had
appointed Charles A. Little, of Washington County, of the
State of Maryland, an auditor, to proceed to the different
points along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and
ascertain the amounts of indebtedness due by said Canal
