1900.] OF THE SENATE. 43 the failure should be attributed to the head and not to the heart. I love my State. I love her people. I love her insti- tutions. She shall have the best I can give of mind and heart. But I feel I cannot succeed without the aid and coun- sel of all good citizens. This I earnestly invoke. With it, and with the assistance and guidance of a Divine Providence, which I pray I may ever have, I know I shall not fail. And now, Mr. Chief Justice, I am ready to take the oath of office. The Hon. Speaker and members of the House of Dele- gates and His Excellency, Hon. John Walter Smith, then retired. At 12.30 P. M., The Secretary of State appeared and delivered a message from the Executive. At 12.35 P. M., On motion of Mr. Bryan, The Senate went into Executive Session. At 12.37 P. M., On motion of Mr. Peter, The Senate resumed legislative business. At 12.50 P. M., On motion of Mr. Crothers, The Senate adjourned until 11 A. M. to-morrow. |
