332 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 16 Messick, Moore, Moses, Peter, Putzel, Ravenscroft, Rohrback, Wilkinson, Williams, of Harford, Williams, of Anne Arundel—21. The Journal of Thursday was read and approved. PETITIONS, MEMORIALS AND OTHER PAPERS. Mr. Moses presented a memorial from the Hillen Democratic Association of the 3d ward of Baltimore city: Whereas, The Board of Police Commissioners, consist- ing of two Republicans and one Democrat, have recently given orders that an antiquated and sectional Sunday law should be rigidly enforced, thus causing great hard- ship and suffering to to many thousands of this city; Therefore, The Hillen Democratic Association of the 3d ward, denounce such action as contrary to the spirit of the age, and subversive of Democratic principles. They furthermore demand a broad and enlightened in- terpretation of the Sunday law, or else a repeal of it al- together, and such remedial Legislation enacted as will enable the multitude, who are compelled to live from hand to mouth, an opportunity to provide themselves with the comforts and necessities of life, as well on the Sabbath day as on any other day; believing that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. They further resolve, that the Senator for the 1st Legislative District, be requested to do all in his power to carry out the views of this association on this matter, and that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to him. Moved by R. E. Carroll, seconded by H. I. Buckley. That foregoing be adopted—carried unanimously. GE0. H. GLANTZ, Feby. 8, 1900. Sec. Which was read, ordered spread upon the Journal, and referred to the Dommittee on Judicial Proceedings. Mr. Betts presented a petition from Rev. Victor Miller and 90 others from Washington county, protesting against any change in the present Sunday law. |
