188 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 1

Lodge, President of Limestone College, an institution
situated at Gaffney, South Carolina, and one of the oldest
and most famous in the State. The college is in my own
Congressional District, and is backed by some of the
largest capitalists in South Carolina.

President Lodge has coflceived the idea of establishing
as a department of this college, "The Winnie Davis
School of History," in which, while other branches of the
subject will not be neglected, especial emphasis will be
laid upon southern history and southern literature. A
beautiful home of white marble, to be called "The Win-
nie Davis Hall of History," will during the present year
be built for this new department of the college. Mrs.
Jefferson Davis has given her hearty support and en-
dorsement to the project, which has been enthusiastically
approved in South Carolina, and by many of the most
prominent men throughout the country.

Dr. Lodge would be greatly gratified if you would be
so good as to contribute to the enterprise the valuable
assistance which a word of commendation over your dis-
tinguished name would give.

May I join in requesting of you this favor?
Very truly yours,

(Signed,) D. E. FINLEY.

Whereas, Limestone College, at Gaffney, South Caro-
lina, with the hearty approbation of Mrs. Jefferson
Davis, has established the Winnie Davis School of His-
tory, in which, while not neglecting other branches of
the subject, especial emphasis will be laid upon Southern
history and Southern literature, in which the rich his-
torical material of the South may be collected, preserved,
organized and interpreted; in which thorough instruc-
tion in history is to be given by expert scholars trained
in university methods, and in which historical investi-
gators will be given a cordial welcome and afforded
every assistance; therefore,

Resolved, That the Legislature of the State of Mary-
land, heartily approving this movement, hereby directs
the State Librarian to donate to the. Winnie Davis School
