The Senate suspended business for half an hour.
Senator Peter took the Chair and Senator Williams, of
Harford, in a brief but happy address, reviewed the work
of the session about to close, and bore witness of the
high regard held by every Senator for the presiding
officer.
In conclusion lie begged of the President to accept a
silver bowl as a small token of the esteem and affection
of the Senate and its appreciation of the I'resident's ser-
vices.
The President responded with feeling; dwelling upon
the uniform courtesy of the body over which he had pre-
sided; its prompt acquiescence in all rulings of the Chair
its devotion to duty and the warm friendships with
which its individual members had inspired him, and ex-
pressing his gratitude both for the gift tendered him and
for the kindly feeling for which it stood.
Mr. Ritter, the Secretary of the Senate, made the fol-
lowing address:
MR. PRESIDENT:—I appreciate the honor in having
been selected as the mouth piece of my associates to
speak for them at this time, hut I realize that there are
times when the mind fails to respond to the emotions of
the heart and soul, and therefore, the tongue, the member
of human expression, lies cold and dumb. And there-
fore, to me, in this presence and on this occasion, I can
only find refuge in the beautiful words of another, say
