the kindness of my friends in bestowing it upon me
without even the usual holding of. a caucus, and without
a competitor from our party, is most gratefully appre-
ciated.

I accept the important trust to which I have been
called under such gratifying circumstances, and shall
faithfully and diligently strive to discharge the duties of
the office in such a way as to protect and promote the
best interest of the State, and to meet the approval and
confidence of my fellow citizens.

I thank you very heartily for your cordial expressions
of good will and for the kind words in which you have
informed me of my election.

And I beg that you will convey to the General Assem-
bly my high and grateful sense of the distinction with
which they have been so good as to honor me.
