At a County Court held the 12th: day of June: Anno 1688
Present Comrs: as aforesd: The Sheriff of this County of Somersett presentes his List of pannell
of a Jury of enquiry for Orphants & Orphant apprentices & estates &a being as follows
Capt: Wm: Piper fforeman Samuell Handy Hope Taylor Thomas Willin Richard Crockett Arnold
Elzey Peter Whaples Jno:Bowen Samuell Costine Jno: Bound William Allexander Jno:
Barber Benja: Kaizer Richd: Webb & Walter Reed who were impannelled & Sworne
to make a dilligent enquiry & a true presentment of all such matters & things as Should
be put to their Charge & brought to their Knowledge according to the best of their -
under Standing which was accordingly don & that under their hands & is as followeth
Somersett County Ss Att a County Cort: this 12th: day of June 1688 by the Jurors
Wee the Jurors: find by peticon that the estate of Jenckin Morris & his Chilldren under
Age be forthwith taken care off by the Court the said Jenckin deying without will
Wee the Jurrs: find by informacon of John Taylor that the estate & Orphan of Thomas
Shollitto be forthwith taken Care off by the Court the said Shollitto deying wthout will
Wee the Jurors: find by the informacon of Graves Jarrett constable of Wiccocomoco -
Hundred that Joane Scoble Servt: to Edward fowler is presented for bastard bearing =
Wee the Jurors: find that Wm: Harriss Servt: Woman is presented for bastard bearing -
Roger Burkham & Graves Jarrett informes/
Wee the Jurors: find that the Inditemt: agt: Henry Smith is void by examinacon of -
Henry Phillips which declares that he did not see Henry Smith loose the said horse
from the fence /
Walter Lane Servt: Woman is Indited for Bastard bearing by informacon of Peter
Whaples & Roger Burkham
Wee the Jurors: find by informacon of Anne Bright that Edmd: Bright Servt: to Natha;;:
Dorothy deced is much abused by Cornelius Ward who hath the sd: boy in possession
Wee the jurors: find by informacon of Jno: Colhoone that Jno: Ellis Junr: hath stolne
Three barrowes marked with a Swallow forke under bitt & over bitt on the right yeare
& a Crop & Slitt on the left Ears Mary Ellis & her Son Wm: Shollitto witnesses this done
the 3d: day of Aprill last 1688
Wee th Jurors: find by Comon fame declared by Robt: Hall that mr: Jno: Loader hath
forged a bill of eight hundred pounds of Tobacco or thereabouts agt: Phillip Conier -
Senr: & therefore presents him Evidences Phillip Conier Jnr: Jno: Ellis Senr: Walter Lodge

Wee the jurors: find that Jno: Elliot junr: is presented for hogg stealing in March last
& likewise in Aprill by informacon of Mary Ellis his wife & circumstances --
Jeffery Michell Wm: Matthews Isack Boston Eseau Boston & Robt: Hall whose decla
=racon followeth Wm: Piper wth: ye rest of ye Jurors:
The examinacon of Mary Ellis at ye: County Court June the 13th: 1688
John Ellis Junr: Sometimes in March last did kill 2 Shoates of above ½ a yeare old the
marke I Cannot tell but he tould me they were John Rowells & further Saith that in the
Same Mounth of March the aforesd: Jno: Ellis Junr: did kill a ground Squirrill barrow
of about 2 or 3 yeares old Cropt & Slitt under neath of one Eare & the other Eare
whole in ditto Mounth he killd Two shoates of above halfe a yeare old cropt &
Slitt in one Eare & the other Eare over halfed in Same mounth Two barrowes marke
with Crop & Slitt of one Eare & Swallow forke of the other the 3d: day of Aprill A
Shoate of ½ a yeare old or thereabouts of the same marke & when he had killed the
hoggs he wd: burne y gutts & bury the hayre in the Ground &a.
