Sommersett County Thomas Manlove late of this County was attached to answr: unto ffrancis
Baker in an accon of defamacon &c
And whereupon the plte by Thomas Poole his Attourney Comes & Saies yt he the said Thomas upon y
third day of August last past in the year of our Lord 1683 at the house of John Goldsmith Senr: the
Said Thomas did maliciously defame and abuse the plte & Called him theefe & many other ill
names & violent Blowes to the great hinderance & disadvantage of y plte being in A strange
place And alsoe the said Thomas did openly declare to y people there at the aforesaid house that y
plte did Steale his negroe from his fence Side whereupon the plte Saith he is Damnified and
hath Damadge to y vallue of Sixteene hundred pounds of tobacco In his Creditt & reputacon &
there upon brings this Sute : / Pledge de Pro Jno Doe
pro quer Tho: Poole Ricd: Roe
And the Said Thomas Manlove deft: Commeth & defs himselfe & pleades not guilty & this he prayes
may be tryed by the Contry To y wch the plte agrees Therefore It is Comanded yt the Sherife of this County
Cause to Come here Twelve good & Lawfull men to Trye the issue Joined between ffrancis Baker plt
& Thomas Manlove deft: Evidences Sworne before the Cort: & Jury on the part of the plte John Shipway

Sommersett County Ss: ffrancis Baker late of this County was attached to answr unto
Thomas Manlove in an accon of the Case ~ ~ ~ ~
And whereupon the plte by Thomas Poole his attorney Comes & Saieth yt he the Said ffrancis upon
the Tenth day of November in the year of or: 1682 Did agree with y plte to mall 800 Logs from Loggs
upon the plts plantacon by xstmas following wch he the Said Baker did faithfully promise to
performe the aforesaid Parcell of Loggs and recd full Satisfaccon of the plte for the same but he
the Said Baker Little regarding his promise but fraudulently intending the plte to deceive of y
quantity of foure hundred of the aforesaid Loggs Doth deny & Still doth Deny to pay the Same
although often thereunto required by the plte whereupon y plte Saith he is Damnified & hath
Damadge for want of his Loggs According to bargaine To y value of 600lb: of tobacco & thereupon
brings this Sute ~ ~ ~ ~ Pledge de pro Jno Doe
pr quer Tho: Poole Ricd Roe
Plaintiffe & deft Joyne issue & putts themselves to be tryed by the Cort the deft desires the decla
may be proved: John Jenkins Susanna his wife & Henry Smith plantr being summoned appeares
& are Sworne This Cort findes wanting by the oathes of y wittnes 420 loggs & therefore orders
yt ffrancis Baker deft Compleate & ffurnish four hundred & twenty fence Loggs on the plts
Land forthwith & pay Cost of Sute alias execucon ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
