The Deposicon of Edward ffrye Tailor aged about twenty four yeares : / :
That about y beginning of June last past I being accompanied with William ffurniss & his wife of y County of
Sommrsett & rideing on y road from Thomas Tulls to y Said ffurniss betweene y said Thomas Tulls & Wm: Turpin
wee were overtaken by Capta: Thomas Jones & Edward Jones of this County Then Capta: Jones said well overtaken
neighbor ffurnisss replyed thanks & civily enquired if y sd: Capta: Jones had heard of his Servant y Sd Jones ~
replyed noe but hee was gone to mr: Johnson to Complaine which if hee was yt he (the Sd: Jones) would break
Johnsons head & his servants to, the saddle Cloth on my horse att y same time fell off Edward Jones stooping
to take it up Capta Jones Said God Damme you why Don't you come along what Doe intend to Doe then ri
ding all in Company Capta: Jones asked ffurniss what was become of y planke y said ffurniss replied hee
Could not tell then Capta: Jones Said hee would make him pay fort Wm: ffurniss replyed itt was more then
hee Could Doe hee y Said ffurniss haveing noe order to looke after itt att which severall aggravateing words arose
& were exprest by y sd: Jones which I cannot punctually remember immediately on which Edward Jones
rode up with ffurnisses wife & strake her severall blowes with a Switch & Called her whore a second time
y sd: Edward Jones Came up with her & Struck her off y horse (from behinde her husband) with his hand & then
when Shee was on y ground hee y said Edward Jones hee y said Edward Jones Struck her on y breast & She
fell all along on y ground then the Said Wm: ffurniss alighted off his horse & said hee was as good bee murde
red with his wife for Shee would bee murthered if hee did not help her then Edward Jones askt what hee should doe with
Capta: Jones then Said hee would hold his horse & Did Soe then Edward Jones & Wm: ffurniss Justled togethr & Edward Jones
threw ffurniss & haveing y Sd: ffurniss on y ground the Said Jones kneeled on his knees upon y Sd ffurniss then ffurnisses
wife intreated Capta: Jones to part y Sd: Edward Jones & her Husband y Sd: Capta: Jones kickt ffurnisses wife yt Shee
fell on a pine Stump then appeared in Sight Wm: Turpin & immediately Sd: Jones rod away & riding y Sd: Capta
Jones said hee would take accot: of y Sd Wm ffurrniss & further Saithnot ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
August y 15th 1677: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Edward ffrye ~ ~ ~
Memorandum yt this Day to witt y 10th: Day of August Annoqe Domini 1677 Att a Cort: helld for Somrsett County before
his Lopps: Justices then there Came y within named Edward ffrye & made oath upon y holy Evangelists to y within
menconed writeing yt what hee hath there Declared is true:

Th Deposicon of Margrett Turpin aged about Two & Twenty yeares of age or thereabout:/:
Wheras I was walking in y ould ffeild hard by y plantation & my husband being in y Corne ffeild I asked of him wt
noyse hee thought that might bee hee tould mee hee thought itt might bee my Brothr: ffurniss a Comeing Drunck home I
tould my husband yt I would goe & lye under y fence to see them Come by & if my brothr ffurniss was angry with his
wife I would endeavour to pacifie him if I:could & when I came thither I sett under y brush ffence & there I heard A
great noyse Crying out whore & Rogue then when I heard a Channgeable voyce then I run over y ffence & went
up to them & Capta: Jones had Edward Jones Horse by y bridle & Edward Jones & my Sister was a scoulding & Calld
her whore & telling her whose whore shee was & with yt Shee Struck Edward Jones & hee replyed Damme you
you whore Doe you Stricke mee & Strooke her on or about y brest & my brothr ffurnis was agoeing to horse & replyed
what fflesh & blood is able to beare this & with that Edward Jones & my brother bustled together & both Came to y ground
& with yt my Sister Olive ffurniss endeavoured to gett Edward Jones of from her husband then Edward Jones & Shee
bustled together then Capta: Jones took her away Sayeing Damme you you whore Doe you pull a man by the
hair then when Capta: Jones in y meane time my brothr & Edward Jones mett together againe with Striveing they both
Came to y ground then Capta: Jones pulled Edward Jones off & bid him Come away & then they mounted & Rod away
& ffurther Saith not ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
