950 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

faith and some otherwise — are ready to abandon the America we
know.

Governor Reagan's sincerity is to be admired, and I shall accept
him at his word that his goal lies more in influencing policy than
seriously seeking the Presidency.

My enthusiasm for Governor Rockefeller is well known. I was the
first Governor to actively and even aggressively urge him to seek the
Republican nomination.

Yet, I have become increasingly impressed with the strength and
sincerity of Mr. Nixon. We share deep ideological bonds, a common
analysis of the essential problems facing America today, and parallel
proposals to resolve them.

Richard Nixon has the courage to make hard decisions, to take
positions that may be temporarily unpopular but will be proven
right. Richard Nixon has foresworn promises he knows cannot be
fulfilled, and denounced policies built on expedience, instant answers,
or the easy way out.

As a chief executive of some experience I know the most impor-
tant trait of leadership is the ability to make hard decisions cor-
rectly and quickly. In no case is this more true than in the Presi-
dency. We have seen this more than once in our lifetime. Richard
Nixon is a man of unshakable principle and this, his source of
strength, shall serve as our source of national security and salvation.

For this reason and because he is the one candidate whose concepts
blend rationality and reality, creativity and discipline, the genius of
private enterprise and the responsibility of public commitment, I
vigorously endorse his candidacy.

ADDRESS NOMINATING RICHARD M. NIXON
FOR PRESIDENT

August 7, 1968

If there is anything predictable in this unpredictable time, it is
that from this convention will emerge not just the standard bearer
of a grand old party, but the President of a brave new country.

We are a nation in crisis, victimized by crime and conflict, frus-
trated by fear and failure.
