DEVELOPMENTS AT PRINCESS ANNE 819

Q. Was your decision on the swimming pool and the bleachers made
after the meeting several months ago?

A. Yes.

Q. Was this during the legislative session?

A. I'd have to get the time of the meeting. It may have been during
the early portion of the legislative session, but it was quite some time
before the capital budget was finalized.

Q. The bleachers were not included originally, were they?
A. No, they were added in a supplemental capital budget.

Q. Governor, the purpose of your meeting this afternoon will be
to find out what the situation is?

A. That's right. I was so encouraged because of the other meeting
I had with the alumni and the way they presented the situation I
felt that I should make an overture to try to reach the same construc-
tive result that was reached at that time. And, incidentally, a lot of
things that were asked for I was not able to grant and told them
frankly that I couldn't at the moment, during the other meeting. But
the acceptance and the logic were very good. The tone of the meeting
was so encouraging that I feel that if this is the kind of young person
that is coming out of this College he at least ought to have the oppor-
tunity to present directly to me what he has to say.

Q. Did they request that meeting?
A. They requested the other meeting.

Q. Does this decision reflect any second thoughts on the way you
handled the Bowie situation?

A. Not at all. I'd do the same thing over again in the Bowie situa-
tion and as a matter of fact, if there are outbreaks of violence fol-
lowed by demands for meetings in this situation, I will not respond to
them at all.

Q. Is some of your concern based on reports that some of the stu-
dents were drawing money from the bank down there?

A. Not at all. I think that if I can believe the news reports, I think
the total amounts withdrawn were about $5, 000. I've had no con-
versations with any of the business or banking community at all. And
this is entirely at my own initiative.
