ready charm, quick intellect and dedicated selfless service to all. He
is generous to a fault and considerate of the needs of the Judiciary.
He has never been awarded any particular honor by this Bar As-
sociation but he has done favors for many of you. He is sincere, honest
and a real family man. But enough about me.
Listen, I am interested in helping my family. Just last month I
bought my aunt a house — but what a shame. Chief Ellison Ensor
wouldn't let her operate it. I am still trying to get Sam Green to stet
the case.
I can't help but get a little sentimental about the profession of law.
Sincerely, I do miss it frequently. But just in case any of you are still
harboring illusions as to its high status, I would like to repeat a quote
from Judge Learned Hand — which more often than not has been
credited to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Judge Hand defined the
law as follows: "It is a noble career that devotes its entire life to
shuttling smoke. " With such smoke shuttlers as Lee Harrison, Jim
Cook, and Gus Hennigan around, it's a wonder we don't need the
Fire Marshall in Towson all the time.
I was really flattered when Ralph Deitz asked me to be the speaker
tonight because I have for a long time admired and respected Ralph.
He is dedicated and enthusiastic and will be a credit to this Associa-
tion. He tells me that he is going to bring honesty and integrity to
this office and that there will be other innovations too.
For a while I thought I'd talk about golf tonight, but that would
mean talking about two elderly members of the County Bench, Chief
Judge Barrett and Judge Menchine. Recounting my tribulations on
the golf course with Les and Albert, I decided to abandon — mainly
because the truth would be embarrassing to me and fiction would be
insufferable to them. Besides, some people thought golf went out at
the end of its second term in 1960 and they were terribly disappointed
when they discovered that the infection had broken out again in Mary-
land last year. But there is one rumor I want to squelch — I do so
allow people to serve on my personal staff who shoot better scores
than I do — after all, I have to have some staff. On the other hand, I
will not deny that I have played golf with members of my staff, nor
will I deny that I know each person's handicap. And I will not deny
that I insist upon proper protocol at all times and in all places. I
think that just about sums up the situation.
I am glad to see my old friend Scott Moore here. He looks relieved
to be out of the battle pit of politics. When Scott was County Solicitor,
