DRAFT ROCKEFELLER COMMITTEES 679

"The warm and enthusiastic response that greeted ray earlier an-
nouncement of plans to form such committees on behalf of a Rocke-
feller draft is gratifying. I am particularly impressed by the number
of these men and by their high standing in the community. Their
willingness to identify themselves publicly with an effort on behalf of
a man who is not an active candidate is not only a tribute to Gov-
ernor Rockefeller but an attestation of their commitment to our
country.

"They share my belief that Nelson Rockefeller is the best qualified
person in the United States to be President and that lie can, in fact,
be persuaded to accept the nomination by a genuine outpouring of
public support. "

Governor Agnew said he has asked L. Mercer Smith, Vice President
of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Maryland and
one of those most active in the formation of the committee, to serve
as temporary chairman and call the first meeting.

At that meeting, the Governor said, the committee can be expected
to organize and elect officers, make plans to file official papers with
the Secretary of State, and lay the groundwork for the draft movement
in the Baltimore area.

The committee members, listed alphabetically, are:

Robert T. Baker, President of the Chesapeake National Bank

Frederick J. Beste, President, Maryland Telecommunications, Inc.

Robert B. Black, Honorary Chairman of the Board, Black and
Decker Manufacturing Co.

Thomas B. Butler, Chairman of the Board, Mercantile-Safe Deposit
and Trust Company

rector of the Field Politics Center, Goucher College

Inc.

Manufacturing Co.
