NEWS CONFERENCE 559

Q. Do you then believe, Governor, that the Chairman of the Balti-
more City Liquor Board's statements, David Shay's statements, about
David Gant's activities at Mount Saint Mary's might have been a
little misleading?

A. I didn't see the statements. I didn't see them, and I wasn't there
when they were submitted.

Q. It advertised Mr. Gant's activities there as irresponsible.

A. Well, I can't say whether they were or they weren't at that par-
ticular time. I can only refer to my meetings with Mr. Gant which
were entirely cordial and constructive.

Q. Returning to politics, you've seemed to have done all right in
the presidential event. Have you thought much of the Congressional
district races in Maryland? Can you tell us what you think are the
Republican chances; who may become the candidates in some of these
races?

A. I can't do that this early except to tell you that the Republican
leadership in the State is concerned about making certain we have
the best possible candidates to seek these Congressional seats. We
don't feel that we have become active enough or we have encouraged
good candidates enough in the past, and we are working very hard.
As a matter of political reality, there are certain seats which we feel
are up for grabs this year. The Republican National Committee's
analysis will affect to some extent which of these seats we make a
determined extra special drive at.

Q. Do you think possibly the Republicans can make an extra special
drive at your old friend Clarence Long's seat?

A. Well, I don't think that Congressman Long is at all invulnerable.

Q. Do you know any young Republicans or old Republicans out
there who may make the race?

A. I know quite a few who may make good Congressional candidates,
and one of them in particular that I think would do an exceptional
job in that seat would be Senator Bishop of Baltimore County. I cer-
tainly would encourage Senator Bishop to consider seeking that nomi-
nation.

Q. Governor, there are some who say, some Republicans who say, that
the decision has already been made between Morton and Mathias
and that Mathias will be the candidate for United States Senator.
Have you been aware of this?
