DEDICATION TO GENERAL WILLIAM SMALLWOOD 225

and Congressman M or ton named as possible Republican candidates.
Has your search gone beyond that?

A. Well, there are a lot of Republicans who are interested. The two
you have mentioned, and Delegate J. Glenn Beall, Jr., is of course a
possibility, and there are others who are interested. I only wish we had
two or three seats, because I think we have some pretty good candidates
that we could run. I don't want to see them get in each other's way.

Q. Governor, Senator Percy came to Baltimore the other day and
sounded very much like a candidate. He kept on telling us what he
would do if given a chance. How do you feel about Senator Percy as
a Republican nominee?

A. Well I think Senator Percy is a very attractive candidate. J think
he's a possibility at this point. We're shaking down a rather formidable
list of possibilities, and I certainly wouldn't want to indicate any elimi-
nation of Senator Percy. He has a wide public appeal, and he's a good
man.

Mrs. Greer, Members of the United States Daughters of the War
of 1812, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Revolutionary War Hero, General William Smallwood. But I con-
sider myself well represented by a distinguished son of Southern
Maryland in the person of Senator Edward T. Hall, and I am sure
my presence will not be unduly missed.

I congratulate you on this occasion, marking another effort to give
recognition and lasting memory to a man who, by his own wish, was
buried in an unmarked grave. The bronze tablet that you dedicate
