interesting subject for most people. And it's a reluctance to become
informed. That's why I took the trouble to go on television in the
hope that this would be a little more palatable way to present some
truths about the program. But even then, I would guess I'd have
trouble competing with a good movie or something that had genuine
entertainment value.

Q. Governor, there were reports last week that said Governor Rocke-
feller and Senator Javits had some sort of secret pledge that would keep
Rockefeller in the running. Would you verify this report?

A. No, I don't know. If you want to be totally informed about the
Rockefeller situation, as interesting an account as I have ever seen was
in last night's Bradford Jacobs article.

Q. You said Jacobs? Was that accurate?

A. No, but it was as accurate as some of the other speculations I have
heard.

Q. Does Senator Javits call you from time to time about your prog-
ress?

A. I have talked with Senator Javits since I have been in office, and
before, at least a dozen times on the phone, yes.

Q. Was it about the Rockefeller campaign?

A. Well, I think that those conversations are private ones, and I don't
want to comment on them at this time, publicly.

Q. How are you doing in your search for a suitable Republican can-
didate for the Presidency?

A. I'm also searching for a Senatorial candidate.

Q. Have you decided on your replacement for Martin Brown, Super-
intendent of State Buildings and Grounds?

A. No, it won't be my decision. Mr, Brown's job comes within the
merit system, and we've asked the classified officers to begin to find
someone for that.

Q. Who will make the decision?
A. The personnel officer, Mr. Davis.

Q. Going back, Governor, you said that you're searching for a Sena-
torial candidate. We have heard the names of Congressman Mathias
