18 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

I have been looking forward to this opportunity to be of further
service to you and to the people of our State.

In my contacts with the members of the Legislature, however,
I have become aware that should both the present Treasurer and
I seek this office, there is a real possibility that a severe and di-
viding factional conflict could result. Such a conflict might well
lead to lasting divisions within the Legislature, and regardless of
any other outcome could only work to the detriment of the State.

This is not the time for division or conflict. This is the time
when, in order to get on with the important business of the State,
you as Governor, the Legislature, and private citizens such as my
self must unite and work for the common good. The important
thing now is to get at the vital problems at hand.

In this belief, I would like to withdraw from candidacy for the
office of State Treasurer.

You know that my principal interest was to help you be elected
Governor. The success of your campaign and the judgment of the
voters in your election give me great satisfaction. My interest at
this time is to do everything possible to assure you a successful
administration. In this connection, I'm sure you know that I stand
ready to help and hope that you will call on me anytime that I
may be able to assist you in the achievement of your objectives.

I would like to just make one comment on that. Mr. Dobbin was
one of my primary advisers. He's a gentleman in whose judgment I
have the utmost faith. He's a very reliable person. I do intend to call
upon him during the course of my administration to continue to ad-
vise me. Whether he will serve in some official capacity or not will
of necessity wait for the future, but he will certainly be in the fore-
front of those to be consulted about policy matters of this administra-
tion.

They are the only announcements I have, gentlemen. If you have
questions, I would be glad to entertain them at this point.

Q. Is Mr. Bresler's position a salaried post?

A. Yes, it is. Mr. Bresler's salary will be in accordance with the
structuring recommended by the Curlett Commission, in accordance
with the salaries of the other top personal staff jobs, and will be in
the realm of $ 18, 000 per annum.
